His Hour Upon the Stage: Trevor Nunn's Othello ()

Doran cast two South African-born actors, Antony Sher and Sello Maake ka-Ncube, in the roles of Iago and Othello, which added a new dimension to the culture clash theme in the play.
Othello, a heroic aging Moroccan Willard White, a Jamaican-British operatic bass played a formidable, dignified Othello, despite lacking the verbal dexterity of some of the other actors. Persian carpets in a smoke-filled room evoked the Venetian Senate while a wall of slatted blinds provided the perfect eavesdropping spot for Othello to spy on Cassio.
Her nuanced playing … establishes Emilia as one of Shakespeare's great tragic roles. Here we see the score of the Cannakin Song, which Iago and the soldiers sing in Act 2 Scene 3, to the accompaniment of a harmonica and concertina.
